After all the positive feedback I received on my last A Week’s Worth of Loungewear post back in July (especially on Instagram — it’s one of my most saved posts this year!), I decided to expand this into a series with Part II today! And yes, I know dresses aren’t typically considered loungewear, but this one is so comfy, it may as well be.
Loungewear has quickly become my most-shopped category of 2020, as I’m sure it has for many of you. I mentioned in my last post that I’m keeping my collection small so that I ensure everything gets worn, choosing to focus on pieces that are comfortable, that I’d be willing to wear both inside and outside of the house, and that can easily be mixed and matched with other items. That being said, I’ve learned that there is definitely an art to loungewear dressing, especially if you’re on as many video conference calls as I am on any given work day, or just want to give off those cool-girl Insta girl vibes when you leave the house. Here are some tips I like following:
- Add jewelry! Even if I’m just wearing a sweat set, I always like accessorizing with a few simple, but impactful pieces, especially from the neck up for those video calls. In fact, I find that the more basic my loungewear outfit, the more I like to jazz it up with a few pieces, whether that’s a pair of drop earrings or a chain necklace. Sometimes I like wearing an anklet!
- Use styling tricks to add personality. I think small styling tweaks add immense personality to an outfit and show that you’re putting so much more intentional thought into wearing your clothes than just putting them on your body. A few tweaks I employ on the regular include French tucking my top, rolling my sleeves (bonus points for rolling them the Jenna Lyons way), and only half-buttoning my shirt.
- Incorporate a “high” item. I always strive for a high-low mix (keep in mind high-low doesn’t necessarily need to refer to the price tag — it can also refer to the impact of the piece. That’s a different topic for a different day, but Cupcakes and Cashmere has a great blog post about this.) whether or not I’m wearing loungewear, and since the loungewear itself could be considered the “low” element of the outfit, I like to throw in a designer bag, statement shoes, or even a blazer. Statement jewelry can also count as a “high” element!
