Say hello to my new throw-and-go summer dress! I’ve been a little slow on the uptake with the drop waist dress trend, since I was afraid the proportions would draw attention to my long torso, but I like how the drop waist on this one isn’t super exaggerated.
For my long torso girlies who are also uncertain about this trend, I’ve found that focusing on proportions is key. The maxi length and volume of the skirt portion of the dress help balance out the exaggerated length of the bodice portion, which I think makes it look better than if I were to opt for a shorter length or sleeker fit. This way, the effect is elongating rather than truncating. Another tip is to choose a piece (or pieces if you’re going with a drop waist top and skirt) in a single color rather than one with colorblocking, since the latter can bifurcate your body in an unnatural way. Overall, it can create a flattering silhouette, especially if you’re looking to highlight your waist while drawing attention away from your hips. This trend is only going to get bigger this season and into next year, so now’s the time to get comfy with it if you’re interested!
This particular dress is comfy and stretchy, has pockets (!), and I can wear a regular bra with it (if that isn’t a fashion win, I don’t know what is). It’s the epitome of an easy summer look for me — just a singular piece I can toss on, and then let my accessories pull everything together. In this case simple hoop earrings, statement sunglasses, and a subtle pop of color with the shoulder bag complement the dress without overshadowing it. This would make for an ideal summer travel outfit too for a day of sightseeing, especially with sneakers or flats. I’ve already worn it a handful of times, swapping out the sneakers for sandals and the shoulder bag for a basket bag — including up to Sonoma a couple of weekends ago for a little wedding anniversary celebration!
